Notice # NOT-OD-05-034, Issued 2/24/05. Provides guidance on the types of incidents and activities involving research animals which MUST be reported to OLAW.

Fatal Rat-Bite Fever --- Florida and Washington, 2003

Memo from the Office of the State Veterinarian: Cervid Tissue Import Ban (Chronic Wasting Disease)

This memo was a public notice from the Office of the State Veterinarian (Bob Gerlach, DVM) strengthening the existing ban (put in to effect April 2003) on the importation of live cervids to now include whole carcasses and certain carcass parts. This prohibition includes the importation of tissues for research purposes without a special permit/exemption issued by the state veterinarian. Laboratory Animal Allergies: Overview of Causation and Prevention

This article in the November 2004 issue of Lab Animal (vol. 33, no. 10, p25-27) is a great source of information on lab animal allergies, including a discussion of appropriate personal protective equipment. The article is available free of charge on the Lab Animal website.

President signs minor use, minor species bill Approved animal drugs to increase under new law (Posted August 3, 2004. Published in advance of the September 1, 2004 issue of JAVMA)

President Bush signed into law Aug. 2 legislation that will increase the number of approved animal drugs for species and ailments for which treatment options have traditionally been limited. [ more ]

USDA: Second inconclusive test also negative for BSE
(updated July 2, 2004)

The USDA has reported that the inconclusive screening test sample reported on June 29 tested negative for BSE upon confirmatory testing. A previous inconclusive screening test sample reported on June 25 had also tested negative for BSE.

The world-recognized gold-standard test for BSE, the immunohistochemistry test, was used to confirm both findings.
