Mike Livingston

Sand Point Facilitator

Michael Livingston was raised in Cold Bay on the Alaska Peninsula and attended Kodiak High School and Bristol Bay High School.   Mike has attended many colleges including Carleton College (Minnesota), University of Pau (France), University of Alaska (Fairbanks, Unalaska, and Anchorage), Alaska Pacific University, Boston College, the University of Louisville (Kentucky), Idaho State University and others.   Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in education (Wayland Baptist University, 1998) and a master’s degree in employee assistance counseling.   Mike is working on his second master’s degree in Alaska Native archaeology and his doctoral degree in education.  

Over the past 35 years, Mike has taught Aleut sea kayak construction and use for 35 years, and in 2000 was chosen to build an uluxtax (two-hatch Unangan sea kayak covered with sea lion hides) during the Alaska Native Heritage Center’s Qayaqs and Canoes project.  

Mike has worked as a police officer in southwest Alaska and Anchorage for over 25 years.   Mike has received several awards and commendations for his work from many agencies including the City of Unalaska, the Mayor of Anchorage, the Alaska Governor’s office, the US Marshal’s office, the American Lung Association, the International Indigenous Film Festival, and the Anchorage District Attorney’s office.
