THE PROJECT:
The Yukon Flats Center needs to be expanded to meet the growing demands
of local students. The Center is the site for numerous classes and
trainings every semester. In programs such as the Council of Athabascan
Tribal Government's Yukon Flats Vocational and Technical Education Program,
students come to Fort Yukon to take intensive, face-to-face courses
for one to two week periods twice per semester.
HISTORY:
In 1999, after the recent fisheries disasters in Bristol Bay, Senator
Stevens appropriated money to the Economic Development Agency (EDA)
to create regional training centers for adults in Alaska. The EDA determined
which communities would be eligible for the Fisheries Disaster Money. Fort Yukon was on the list.
The
Yukon Flats Center applied for the funds and in May of 2001, the Interior-Aleutians
Campus UAF was awarded 1.2 million dollars from the Economic Development
Association's Fisheries Disaster Funds to build an addition to the existing
university building along with a ten-student dormitory. This would make
the Center a Voc/Tech Center for the Yukon Flats Region. The University
of Alaska committed $400,000.00 in matching funds to be used to elevate
the existing building and reduce flood damage.
CURRENTLY:
An additional 1.5 million dollars
to complete the existing project and renovate the heating and
septic systems that were not included in the original project.
