The Yukon Flats Center provides opportunities for higher education to residents of  nine Interior Alaskan communities which lie along the Yukon River and its tributaires. Only two communities, Circle and Central, are connected to the Alaska highway system.  The other seven communities are accessible by airplane and/or boat.   The population of the region is approximately 1,320 people.  Approximately 86% are Alaska Native, predominantly Athabascan.

The Yukon Flats Center serves its students through a combination of distance delivery and local face-to-face courses.  Students have the opportunity to pursue several Certificate and Associate degrees and may also obtain a Bachelor's of Arts in some disciplines.  The Yukon Flats Center is currently a partner with the Council of Athabascan Tribal Governments to offer a certificate in early childhood development through the Young Athabascans program.

The Yukon Flats Center was built in 1980 and has served as an educational center for the region for 20 years.  A grant from the EDA will allow the Center to expand and add a small dormitory for visiting students in 2002.
This stained glass window, depicting a fish wheel on the Yukon River, is located above the entrance to the Yukon Flats Center.
