The village of Koyukuk, at the confluence of the Koyukuk and Yukon Rivers is one of the nine villages served by the Yukon-Koyukuk Center

Originally located in the Yukon River village of Galena, the center moved to Fairbanks in 1990 where it was for seven years. We have now relocated to Galena. The center provides educational services, including local and audioconference courses, financial aid information and other student support to a total of 9 communities located along the Yukon and Koyukuk River systems. Approximately 73% of the population is Alaska Native, predominantly Athabaskan. It is dispersed over a geographical area in excess of 60,000 square miles. The means of travel is by air and none of the communities are road accessible. The area is generally characterized by high unemployment. However, there is a growing interest in eco-tourism, the Rural Human Services Program, Rural Development Applied Field Based program and Native language instruction.
