Welcome to Unalaska!
A listing of things to do during your visit Unalaska Side:
Stop in and chat with Henry's House personnel and find
out about Henry Swanson's fascinating life.
Visit Nicky's Place, an incredible gift shop and book store on the beach
front road.
The Cathedral of the Holy Ascension is a national historic landmark, worthy
of viewing and photographing.
Walk across the street to the town creek (Iliuliuk River) and view salmon
spawning.
You can also get a good view from the foot bridge accessed down the alley
from Henry's.
Visit Carl's Inc., an all purpose hardware, department/grocery store,
located at the tip of the Unalaska spit next to Town Creek.
The Elbow Room, dubbed by Playboy in the 1970's as the most notorious
bar on the North American continent, would be a good place to get a memorable
photo!
Walk the front beach to the cemetery and memorial park for a close-up
view of a bunker from WWII and the propeller from the SS Nortwestern which
was bombed by the Japanese in June, 1942.
Take a short hike up to the cemetery and check out the colors of the tundra
of Unalaska depending on the season.
Mail a postcard from the Unalaska Post Office.
Stop at Unalaska City Hall to view the Unangan Memorial, dedicated to
the Unangan evacuees of WWII.
Go beachcombing.
Amaknak Island or the Dutch Harbor side:
Notice the airport hangar building, the aerology building,
the powerhouse and many barracks and warehouses- all constructed during
the Aleutian Campaign of WWII.
Drop by Ziggy's for lunch.
Check out the two grocery/department stores for those necessities.
Eagle Quality Center and Alaska Commercial Company are ready to serve
you.
Stop by the Grand Aleutian Hotel and check out their wonderful gift shop,
or if you are hungry or thirsty, have lunch in the café or a drink in
the lounge.
While in the hotel, stop by the Unalaska/Port of Dutch Harbor Convention
and Visitor's Bureau.
Mail a postcard from the Dutch Harbor Post Office.
Visit the Museum of the Aleutians and view the many wonderful exhibits!
Climb Ballyhoo Mountain for a fantastic view of the island and to visit
Ulakta Head, a newly designated National Heritage Area.
Climb Bunker Hill for the view, WWII installation and pick yourself some
wild Unalaska blueberries!
