Jerah Chadwick, Professor and Regional Coordinator, first came to Unalaska in 1982 to raise goats and write, living in an abandoned WW II complex, an eight mile walk to town. From 1982 to 1985, he taught part-time for what was then the Unalaska Rural Education center. After completing his MFA at UAF in 1988, he returned to teach for and coordinate the newly reorganized regional program. He has been active in helping to teach the revived art of Aleut Bentwood Hatmaking through the annual Unalaska culture camp, Camp Qungaayu^x, and has served on the boards of directors for many Unalaska organizations, including the local museum, school board, arts council, women’s shelter, public library, etc. He is a widely published poet, with STORY HUNGER, his first full-length collection released in a second edition in 2005 by Salmon Publishing of Ireland. In 2004 the Alaska State Council on the Arts appointed him to a two-year term as Alaska State Writer Laureate. |
Shawn Dickson, Administrative Assistant, first came to Unalaska in 1974 to work in the fisheries. Shawn started as an Associate of Arts candidate with the center in 1989 and completed her degree in 1992. She then earned her Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from UAA and her Master’s degree in Anthropology and Museum Science at the University of Arkansas. Shawn is well known as a student advocate and draws upon her own educational experiences to advise and support regional students. She is active in the local Weaver’s Guild, teaches for Camp Qungaayu^x, and often works with archeological programs during her summer vacations. |
