UAF Honors Program students are always involved in lots of great activities and events, including bonfires, barbecues, academic competitions, and weekend trips. Please feel free to think of new events to get students together.

Students organize a trip to Chena Hot Springs located 60 miles outside of Fairbanks. After students sign up, rides are arranged and the costs generally include gas money and a swim pass ($10). There are food accomodations available at Chena Hot Springs, but if you're concerened about cost, bringing your own water and snacks is recommended. And don't forget to bring your towel and swimsuit!

For the past 3 years, the Honors Student Council has organized and participated in the nationwide Homeless and Hunger Awareness Week. Participation is to help raise awareness about the difficult conditions in which Fairbanks community homeless survive in. Monies donated during this week go to the Street Outreach and Advocacy Program which works with homeless and at risk youth. At least 2 students sleep outside in -30 to -40 degree weather in tents placed in the UAF quad. Their only source of warmth are burn barrels. This year, wood was generously donated by UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers, Honors Program director Dr. Gary Laursen, and the Catholic Campus Ministry.

This fall Dr. Laursen invited the Honors students to overnight at his cabin on Harding Lake. There was swimming in the cold lake waters and a mushroom hunt overseen by our mycological expert, Dr. Laursen, in the surrounding forest. After, we helped close up the cabin for the long winter.

The canoe trip was a lot of fun -- and, no one got dunked in the river. (If you think getting dunked in the river is fun, you haven't been dunked in the upper Chena River in mid-September. Brrrr!)

In celebration, we host a dinner and scavenger hunt for honors students and friends wanting some free food and a good time.
Food service will begins around 6 p.m. and the hunt begins at 7 p.m. Bring a flashlight! It just may prove to be helpful. Dressing and talking like a pirate is encouraged. Bringing friends is a must (they don't have to be in the program). Honors program will provide some supplies as needed.

Ice Art! We went on March 9th, 2012. We met at the Honors House by 5:15pm and caravaned to the World Ice Art Championships. This is, in fact, a world class event and an opportunity that should not be missed. If you're skeptical of the awesomeness that awaits, see the images at their Ice Art website.
