National Merit-Based Scholarships
The nomination process for several of the national level, merit-based scholarships is coordinated by the Director of the Honors Program (honors@uaf.edu, x6612). Students do not apply directly for these programs; applications are screened at the institutional level and move forward after receiving institutional endorsement. This page briefly describes those scholarships, provides the local deadlines for candidates, and provides links to more complete information. Faculty are requested to encourage qualified students to consider these awards.
Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships
These scholarships, the first for graduate study at Oxford and the second for graduate study at nearly any graduate program in the UK, are the most prestigious and high profile appointments available to students in the U.S. Students should have exceptional records in the classroom, in research, and in service; the Rhodes bequest also stipulates a demonstrable quality of physical well-being. Both provide up to two years of full support including tuition and travel.
The nomination/application process is fairly intense, and involves both an application for graduate work (essentially a description of study and research to be undertaken) and for funding, to be accompanied by (at least) four letters of reference from faculty. Students who advance are invited for interviews at regional sites. This year, the local deadline for students interested in either program is 9/11/2009. For more information about these two programs, please see the Rhodes Scholarships website and the Marshall Scholarships website.
Truman Scholarships
Truman Scholarships are also for graduate support, and target students who intend to make careers in public service. This national program is as selective (60 Truman Scholars each year) as the Rhodes and Marshall scholarship programs, and also provides very generous support. Students apply in the junior year, and those who advance are invited for interviews at regional sites. It is also an institutional nomination, with a local deadline of 12/11/2009. For more information, see the Truman Scholarships website.
Goldwater Scholarships
Goldwater Scholarships target undergraduate students in science, technology, and engineering ("STEM") fields. This national program is nearly as selective (300 Goldwater Scholars each year) as the others. Students are nominated as sophomores or as juniors. Those selected receive up to $7500 for each remaining year of college two years for sophomore nominees and one year for junior nominees). It is also an institutional nomination, with a local deadline of 12/11/2009. For more information, see the Goldwater Scholarships website.
Other Scholarships
