Benefits
Honors designation on your diploma indicates exceptional academic performance in an especially challenging course of study. It’s recognized across the country at hundreds of universities. Honors at UAF emphasizes undergraduate research, which has proven particularly helpful for students applying to top-ranked graduate programs. All honors students have the opportunity to work directly with faculty on their senior capstone projects. However, the benefits extend beyond enhancement of your resume.
Gain leadership experience. During their college years, honors students can also expand their leadership skills through the Honors Student Advisory Council. This committee organizes student social activities and fund-raising events to benefit local nonprofit agencies.
Qualify for special funding. The UAF Honors Program helps fund student travel to academic conferences like the Western Regional and National Honors conferences. In addition, several scholarships are available to students in good standing in the program. The Honors Program currently has annual grants available for Honors students in good standing from funds donated by the Usibelli family and other sources. Usibelli Tuition Grants were earned by 10 Honors students in 2008-2009. Contact the Honors Program for more details.
Make yourself at home. Honors students have a special place on campus. The Honors House offers a quiet place to study, a comfortable setting for meeting with friends, and a kitchen where friends can prepare meals. The Honors House also has computers and multimedia equipment.
Expand your social circle. There are more than 150 honors students. They come from many states and several foreign countries, and represent majors from all UAF academic disciplines. The Honors Program is also home to over 100 UA Scholars from across Alaska.
