Oct. 31, 2012 -- Autoflush mechanisms in lower campus buildings

QUESTION

I'd like to know whose idea it was to install self-flushing toilets in the lower campus buildings. I do not know anyone who likes them. They either flush every minute or don't flush at all. To put this as delicately as possible, you can be sitting doing your business and suddenly there is flushing, which sprays unsanitary stuff up upon you, not to mention it just startles you at most inopportune moments. If someone thought this was a water saver, it doesn't appear to be. The universal annoyance factor certainly outweighs any possible benefits.

And while we're on the subject, the automatic soap and water faucets are not an improvement either.  They were obviously designed by someone who thought all we do at the sink is wash our hands. No chance to get either hot or cold water if needed, and unless you angle the cup or whatever you're trying to rinse just right, it gets soap on it whether you want that or not.

Facilities Services is rethinking the use of auto flushometers in campus buildings. Restrooms in the Bunnell Building will be used as a test site and changed over to normal toilet flush mechanisms soon. After a period of time we'll request feedback from building users. Facilities will look at the automatic faucets and soap dispensers at a later date.
 

Oct. 31, 2012 -- Halloween activities at Wood Center

QUESTION

Why was the Wood Center Halloween event cancelled?

RESPONSE

As part of an overall UA effort, UAF is examining its policies and practices regarding minors on campus. We had planned to try a new method of screening volunteers for the Wood Center Halloween event. Unfortunately, we misjudged the amount of time it would take to accomplish our plans and as a result had to cancel the event this year.

Oct. 15, 2012 -- Bathroom door lock in Signers' Hall

QUESTION

The lock on the women's bathroom on the first floor of Signers'  Hall has been broken for at least two weeks. The sign indicating that facilities had been contacted has been there for over a week. There are not many bathrooms on the first floor of Signers' and Eielson so this problem has become very obvious and annoying. Is there any idea when this will be fixed?

RESPONSE

Due to unexpected circumstances and resulting staffing levels, this project ended up on the backlog. Facilities Services crews were able to fix the lock on Friday, Oct. 12. If you have any questions regarding outstanding work orders, please call the customer service line at 474-7000.

Oct. 10, 2012 -- West Ridge commuter trail

SUGGESTION

What work is being done to the West Ridge commuter trail?

The existing commuter trail connecting Sheep Creek Road with Lookout Point is very sloped which prevents the trails manager from using a snowmachine to pack the trail after periods of heavy snowfall. In the past, it has been up to the walkers and cyclists to pack the trail. There was a bulldozer in the area working on another project, so we were able to bring it out to level this section of trail. This improvement will allow the trail to be packed on a regular basis during the winter.

Oct. 8, 2012 -- Dining services staff and hair nets

SUGGESTION

The employees at Wood Center Dining need to wear their hairnets properly or just not bother. The purpose of a hairnet is to prevent hair from falling into food. I see most of the employees leaving the front of their hair loose and free while covering the back. This completely defeats the entire reason for a hairnet in the first place. Dining services should either save themselves some money by not bothering with the nets or require the employees to wear them correctly.

RESPONSE

Thank you for your suggestion. Dining services at UAF are provided by an outside contractor, but we certainly want to hear about any concerns about the services or health codes not being followed at any of our dining locations. We'll forward this suggestion to the contract manager right away and ask that he/she look into the matter.
