Thursday, June 30, 2011 -- Bike friendly campus
Would be great if UAF could be more bike-friendly by putting in a bike lane between the roundabout and Westridge and between Westridge and Wood Center.
Also it would be great to put in a sidewalk between the roundabout and West ridge for pedestrian traffic.
Are there plans to do this?
Thank you for your suggestion. Enhanced bike and pedestrian paths have been identified as a need in the current Campus Master Plan. However, most pedestrian improvements are typically included as part of other improvement projects due to limited funding.
Thursday, June 30, 2011 -- Pedestrian safety on campus
According to State of Alaska Bicycle Law 13 AAC 02.400.3 Riding Bicycles On Roadways And Bicycle Paths, people on bicycles are to, "yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian."
I saw a pedestrian JUMP out of the way from a speeding bicyclist down the hill on Alumni Drive today. This behavior has become normal and I only one of numerous instances. If it had been my young daughters and I walking, we certainly would have been injured.
Where are the laws protecting people from these out of control and rogue bicyclists? How about giving the parking people authority to ticket?? If there is going to be the campaign promoting bicycle riding for sustainability reasons, there should be a campaign promoting safety of pedestrians!
Tuesday, June 21, 2011 -- Signers, Signer's or Signers'
What is the proper name for the building that houses offices such as the Business Office and Admissions? Is it Signers, Signer's or Signers'? I have seen it a variety of ways on signage and in publications around campus.
If you notice signs that are inconsistent with the name of the building, please contact Facilities Services at 474-7000.
Monday, June 6, 2011 -- Painting the designated crosswalks
Vehicle traffic is asked to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, but the white paint designating crosswalks has worn off in most cases. When is UAF going to repaint them?
Facilities Services is in the process of hiring a contract painter and mapping out the streets and parking lots. Work could begin as early as mid June.
Monday, June 6, 2011 -- Peak hours for shuttle service
What hat exactly are the "peak hours" mentioned on the parking signs in the Nenana lot and at the Eielson Building stop?
From Todd Smith, Facilities Services
Peak Hours are defined as the hours which have the higher number of passengers, such as before the 8 a.m. hour when people are arriving at the parking lot to get to work, the noon - 1 p.m. lunch hour, when
people are leaving and returning from lunch, and the 5 p.m. hour, when people are leaving work to return to the Nenana parking lot. Please keep in mind that during the summer, all buses are on-call, and if you do not see a bus, you can always call 474-RIDE (7433) and a bus will be dispatched to a bus stop nearest to your location. You can also check the shuttle tracker to see the locations of the buses.
Monday, June 6, 2011 -- Summer mowing
With our lovely spring weather, many folks have taken to having lunch outdoors on picnic tables. Unfortunately, at the tables in front of the Arctic Health Building over the past several days, landscape folks have also chosen the lunch hour to take to mowing (in loud, dust throwing machines) the surrounding lawns, making it hard to converse and sandwitches gritty. Would it be possible to avoid 12-1 p.m. for mowing (and watering with sprinklers that soak the tables)? Thanks very much.
From Marianne Freelong, Facilities Services
Thank you for forwarding your concern. Facilities Services employees take lunch from noon - 12:30 p.m. daily. All lawns are mowed one day a week. We are asking the employees to try their best to get the work done without bothering anyone, but no matter where we are mowing, we will have to inconvenience someone.
June 6, 2011 -- Expo markers in the classroom
I understand that chalk is to be added in the classrooms, but many times no Expo markers are available. Will they restock those as well in the classrooms?
From Marianne Freelong, Facilities Services
The custodial contract covers replenishing chalk, erasers and markers. Basically, all the supplies for white boards and chalk boards would be our responsibility through the contract.
Anyone having a problem should call 474-7000 so we're aware of the problem and can correct it.
Monday, June 6, 2011 -- Pita Place at Wood Center
Do we know what happened with Pita Place possibly selling food on campus? I'd heard that they were unable to cover insurance costs in order to operate at the Wood Center. Is that true? If so, is there anything that the University can do to help attract or assist vendors? Pita Place on campus is a great idea, and I was sorry to find out that it would not happen.
From Robert Holden, director of Auxiliary, Recharge and Contract Operations
Dining Services was working with the Falafel company to provide services on campus this past winter. During the process, there are items that needed to be covered before they could start. Options were developed so they could provide services, but by the time the options were developed, they were unable to staff the location. We will be following up with the company this summer to see if arrangements can be made for this fall.
