Giving Form

Scholarships

Scholarship support is one of the most powerful and important ways to impact the lives of UAF students.

There are three ways to support student scholarships at UAF:
•    Annual Giving
•    Gifts to existing scholarships
•    New scholarships

Annual Giving

The most immediate, substantial way to impact students is through scholarships, and many of those come in as a result of unrestricted Annual Giving.

At UAF, a healthy tradition of giving starts with this vibrant program – alumni, friends, employees and community members give meaningful gifts on an annual basis to the Chancellor's unrestricted fund.  These funds are used primarily for scholarships and fellowships— to supplement existing named scholarship funds, or start new endowed scholarships as well as general scholarships. Ongoing fundraising efforts through the year ensure resources are available for essential needs, and help UAF attract and retain motivated, outstanding students and faculty.

Gifts to existing scholarships

Contributions can be made to existing endowed or restricted funds at any time.  This is a significant way of honoring a person, or showing support for the values they express through the scholarship criteria. View existing scholarship funds by school or program, or alphabetically by last name.

Note – students who wish to apply for scholarships, please see more specific information on the Financial Aid webpage.

Establishing a new scholarship

There are two types of scholarship funds here at UAF: endowed and restricted.

Endowed
•    A minimum of $25,000 is required to create an endowed named fund.  Endowed scholarship gifts are invested and scholarships are awarded from the interest earned, therefore preserving the principal of the account in perpetuity.  This is the most long-term, monumental form of scholarship support. For more in-depth information about this process, please see the UA Foundation, which provides administrative overview of all UAF funds.
•    The Development Office coordinates with the donor to determine selection criteria and the name of the fund through a document called a gift agreement.

Restricted
•    A minimum of $5,000 is required to create a restricted named fund.  Restricted scholarships are smaller funds which are not invested, but donated directly into scholarships or fellowships; if the funds are not replenished by additional gifts, they will be closed.
•    The Development Office coordinates with the donor to determine selection criteria and the name of the fund through a document called a gift agreement.

SCHOLARSHIP by the NUMBERS

Each scholarship UAF awards means lives that are changed because of the opportunities those gifts present. The total number of scholarships and awards give to UAF students over the years now equals 6,451. Think of the thousands of careers those funds have launched, the millions of other lives which are improved in Alaska because of this valuable investment in education and workforce development at UAF, TVC and the numerous rural campuses under the UAF umbrella. Some other powerful numbers:

Scholarships & awards given in fiscal year 2008 = 489

Students who received scholarships & awards = 399

Total amount of scholarships & awards in FY08 = $758,854

New scholarship & award funds established in FY08 = 13
