Conodont Laboratory/Tectonics and Sedimentation Research Group

Geophysical Institute Palynology Lab/Quaternary Studies

Dept. of Geology and Geophysics

Andy Krumhardt

The conodont lab involves the collecting, processing, and identification of microfossils called conodonts in association with determination of carbonate sedimentary lithologies and paleoenvironments. Conodonts are the teeth of an extinct marine jawless fish that are useful in determining age, paleoenvironments, and thermal history of the host rock. Studies focus primariliy on the Carboniferous Lisburne Group of the northeast Brooks Range.

The palynology lab involves the collecting, processing, and identification of pollen and associated flora and fauna in order to determine climate history. Studies focus primarily on Quaternary and Holocene sediment from interior Alaska lake cores and bluff sections from the Noatak River basin (northwest Alaska).
