Student Funding Opportunities
The Department of Geology and Geophysics recognizes that it is becoming more difficult to obtain full financial support for graduate students. However, there are a number of competitive funding opportunities available within UAF and from other agencies that can help offset the costs. We encourage students to apply for additional sources of funding through scholarships, fellowships, and grants. While some opportunities can be extremely competitive, others may actually be undersubscribed with applicants and have a relatively high success rate. It is your responsibility to know the deadlines, apply for these competitive grants, and to seek and apply to other grant opportunities that are not as well advertised. Ask your advisor or other committee members for advice and assistance with applications as needed.
Some of the opportunities below offer small amounts of support for research or field work. Others offer 1 semester or more of stipend, tuition, and fee payment. The most competitive, such as the NSF Graduate Fellowship, can offer 3 or more years of full support including a small amount of funds for travel and research. Talk to your advisor and/or committee members and seek out examples of successful applications. Please see the listing below, grouped approximately by the level of support offered.
