Geoscience Club Field Trip August 27-29, 2004

The geoscience club is off and running for the year! For our annual fall trip we traveled down the Richardson Highway into the Alaska Range. With the guidance of our faculty advisor Rainer Newberry, we stopped at road-cuts, scenic view points and the active Denali fault zone to get a feel for the geology of the Alaska Range. Recent graduate Sean Bemis lead a group of us out to Gulkana Glacier and provided excellent information about the magnitude 7.9 Denali fault earthquake. The next day Rainer led us in a search for Platinum-bearing rocks near the Cantwell Glacier.

This bridge is super fun to get rocking from one end or the other. From the middle, you begin to second guess your decision!
