Specialization and Research Interests
Dr. Jeffries is a member of the Snow, Ice and Permafrost Group at the Geophysical Institute, and a cooperating faculty member of the Department of Geology and Geophysics. His current research interests include:

1.  the growth and decay of sea ice and lake ice, and resultant variations in ice thickness, properties and structure;

2.  remote sensing of sea ice and lake ice properties and processes, and air-ice-water interaction;

3.  interactions between climate and sea ice and lake ice, and the role of the polar regions in global change.

4.  snow and ice research experiences for Alaska K-12 teachers to promote learning in the local context.

Dr. Jeffries conducts his research in the Arctic and Antarctic. Since late 1990 he has participated in eight Antarctic sea ice research cruises, either as a Principal Investigator or Chief Scientist. His lake ice research has concentrated on shallow tundra lakes on the Alaska North Slope and at the Poker Flat Research Range near Fairbanks. For more information about snow and ice research experiences for teachers, go to ALISON (Alaska Lake Ice and Snow Observatory Network).
