Todd Sformo, a Ph.D. candidate with UAF's Institute of Arctic Biology, collects samples of a fungus gnat (Mycetophilidae exechia) in a forest near the Fairbanks campus. The tiny insect can survive freezing of its abdomen which occurs around -30°C, but does not survive freezing of its head and thorax which occurs around '50°C.
