2009 UAF Heat & Power Plant Turbine Overhaul
Submitted: February 10, 2010
Final Wrap-up Report
The utilities department completed required maintenance on the electricity-generating turbine this past summer. During that time, electricity was purchased from Golden Valley Electric Association and the entire campus was called on to help reduce electric consumption. Facilities Services turned air handlers off at night, kept chillers off to the greatest extent possible, and limited use of all high-use, electric-driven building components.
On May 27, shortly before the turbine was brought back online the university community reduced overall energy consumption by 3%, approximately $10,000 in savings. The following month, the utilities division continued to rely on GVEA for maintenance on the coal-fired boilers at the power plant.
The final electrical savings was $24,300 or an overall energy consumption reduction of 3.5%.
Unseasonably warm weather and lack of individual control in office areas were challenges that we believe prevented the campus from reaching the goal of saving $50,000 goal.
In addition to the overhaul, the utilities division also:
- Changed out the turbine speed/load control system
- Changed the voltage regulator control system
- Changed out the power meter
- Relocated the control room
- Made the surface condenser operational
