Project Description
The new BICS-BIRD Biological Research and Diagnostics Facility is located on the UAF West Ridge, the center of
science and research activities for the UAF campus. The facility incorporates program components and facilities for
laboratory animal holding and care, procedure rooms, animal care administrative space, on site biological waste
handling (incinerator) and building support space. Diagnostic labs, surgical suite, and necropsy suite are included
in the design but will not be finished until additional funding is obtained.
The 42,000 gsf facility will
consist of two levels with a mechanical penthouse. The below grade level will house the animal holding and procedure
rooms, cage wash system, and animal support space. The ground level includes administrative space, incinerator,
necropsy, surgery, labs and mechanical space. The building is composed of simple masses with an exterior of insulated
metal panels. The facility is modest in appearance but very well designed for its intended purpose.
The facility is currently under construction. Foundation work was completed last fall prior to winter shutdown.
Construction will resume in Spring 2005.
