Division Summary
|
Facilities Services is composed of six divisions. The divisions include: Administration and Real Estate Management,
Budget and Accounting, Design and Construction, Maintenance, Operations, and Utilities.
These units provide support to the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the extended campuses located in Bethel, Nome,
Kotzebue, Dillingham, Ft. Yukon, Tok, Nenana, McGrath, Delta, and Unalaska. In addition UAF has research facilities
located in Kodiak, Palmer and Seward.
Prior to 1998, the maintenance and operation, design and construction, and utilities divisions were managed separately.
There was a lack of coordination and a redundancy of work responsibilities. Recognizing these systematic weaknesses,
the Vice Chancellor of Administrative Services created one cohesive department, Facilities Services. All entities that
have responsibilities for facilities; whether that responsibility was maintaining, operating, leasing facilities,
producing electricity, water and steam, or design and construction of new facilities; were combined within one department,
under the direction of the Director of Facilities Services. The restructuring has brought the groups of specialized teams
together, allowed them to pool resources, and to share one vision and one collective goal.
The newly integrated departments now have a clearly defined mission to operate, maintain, and constantly improve our
robust infrastructure and to support our customers in order that they may accomplish their missions. Specifically, the
divisions provide safe, efficient, and expert support to the University of Alaska Fairbanks by operating and maintaining
the physical environment, constructing and renovating facilities, providing high quality uninterrupted service of water and
power, providing campus planning and engineering services, and by protecting property interests.
The reorganization encouraged the thoughtful development, maintenance, and operation of our campus infrastructure and has
been guided by a clear, concise plan. The reorganization has also improved our services by developing divisional mission
statements, by consolidating policies and practices, and streamlining procedures in order to minimize confusion among
campus users about responsibilities for various aspects of facilities. It has also provided opportunities for incorporating
Facilities Services priority decisions into the larger context of strategic and academic planning. This united approach
has been successful even when tested by budget cuts, reduced staffing levels (in both the professional arena and the
crafts and trades) and reduced capital funding.
Facilities Services continues to focus on improving interaction and communication with staff, providing pertinent
training opportunities, increasing staffing and in-house expertise to handle workloads, increasing utilization of
current technologies, updating existing internal systems for efficiency, and updating equipment.
