Grants are usually based on your financial need and do not
have to be repaid. Most grants are designed for undergraduate students.
Academic Competitiveness Grant
An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and who had successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education. Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. The program will be available for the first time for the 2006-07 school year for first year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006 and for second year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005. The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
AKAdvantage Grant
Need-based grant awarded to AK residents attending AK institutions. Priority is given to students pursuing degrees in Alaska workforce priority programs (e.g. allied health, social and community services, or teaching) or who have an ACT score of 25 or higher or SAT score 1180 or higher. Part-time awards range from $500 to $1000 per academic year. Full-time awards range from $1000 to $2000 per academic year.
Bureau
of Indian Affairs (BIA)
The BIA offers federal grants to undergraduate full-time
students. You must be at least one-quarter American Indian or Alaska
Native to apply. These grants are based on financial need and supplement
other financial aid. Grants range from $200 to $3,000 or more each year.

The Edward & Anna Range Schmidt Charitable Trust
Established in 1993 to encourage and assist promising students to pursue education in the sciences, particularly earth and environmental sciences. The primary focus of the Trust is to assist rural Alaskan Natives prepare for roles in the planning and control of the land and its natural resources and to aid them in becoming positive role models. The Trust is also interested in assisting promising minority students in Alaska.
EPSCoR
Grants
Each year Alaska
EPSCoR infuses funds into four focus areas: physiology, genomics, engineering,
and contaminants. In addition to internal awards in these areas, Alaska
EPSCoR supports training of students for the 21st century technologically-based
workforce. EPSCoR offers a series of grants, awards, internships and
scholarships for faculty, undergraduate students and graduate students.
Horizon Grant
Need-based tuition assistance grant is awarded to eligible undergraduate students pursuing bachelor degrees in business administration, accounting, biological sciences, civil engineering, computer science, elementary education, electrical engineering, fisheries, geological engineering, geological/environmental studies, mechanical engineering, mining engineering, natural resources management, petroleum engineering, rural development, and wildlife biology. Current (and transfer) UAF students must have a minimum cumulative gpa of 3.0. Incoming freshman must have a high school gpa of 3.0 or ACT 24+ (SAT 1100+). The actual award amount is $800 per academic year, students must also be enrolled and have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). (Grant will be discontinued June 30, 2007)

Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
This is a grant for exceptionally needy undergraduate students. Awards can range from $1,000 to $4,000 each year depending on funding appropriated by the U.S. Congress.
Graduate
Travel Grants
Grants are available
to qualifying graduate students for the purpose of traveling to a destination
where the grant recipient will be giving a presentation on research
or work that applies towards the recipient's degree program. The goal
of the grant is to maintain and improve the quality of the educational
experience by providing experience in professional settings. For more

The Federal Pell Grant is awarded to eligible undergraduate students pursuing certificate, associate or bachelor's degrees. The actual award amount is based on your cost of attendance, expected family contribution (EFC) and enrollment status. It can range anywhere from $400 to $4,310 and is adjusted annually by the U.S. Congress
Student Support
Services Program (SSSP) Grants
Student
Support Services offers grant aid to qualified program participants
who have made use of the SSS academic support services and are
receiving Pell Grant funds. To be eligible to participate in Student
Support Services, you must be a (1) first generation college (student
neither parent has a college degree), OR (2) have a documented
learning or physical disability, OR (3) qualify as a low income

University of Alaska (UA) Grant
Beginning the 2007-2008 academic year, this need-based tuition assistance grant will be awarded to eligible students who have completed less than 60 credits towards their undergraduate degree. In addition, students must complete the FAFSA by April 15, be an AK resident, be admitted to a degree program, be enrolled in at least 6 or more credits, and be maintaining academic eligibility as defined by the financial aid office policy of satisfactory academic progress. Award amounts will vary and are capped at a maximum of $1,000.
