alaskaLand the film: FAIRBANKS PREMIERE!
Friday December 7 at 7PM in the Lee H. Salisbury Theatre
struggling to balance the expectations of his traditional Nigerian parents and the larger
world around him. After a tragic car crash, Chukwuma is separated from his younger
sister, Chidinma, who moves to Nigeria with their Uncle until she becomes of legal age.
Two years later the siblings reconnect to find their estrangement has created new
personal and cultural frictions in ways that bring them closer to each other and their
roots, as well as help them define what it means to be a Nigerian in Alaska.
Nigerian-born, Alaskan-raised screenwriter, producer and director. A recipient of the
prestigious Princess Grace Award, Chinonye’s short, THE DANCE LESSON, premiered
at the Ritz Theater of Philadelphia and was later acquired by mindTV for regional
network distribution The film was also a Regional Finalist for the 2010 Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Student Academy Awards and an Honorary Mention
at the Los Angeles International Film Festival. Chinonye’s other work include IGBO
KWENU!, a recipient of the PIFVA Subsidy Grant from the independent film community
and both the “Best Motion Picture Award” and “Best Screenplay Award” at the 2009
Diamond Screen Festival. She has recently completed her first feature narrative,
ALASKALAND, which began its festival run in Fall 2012.
Productions – and was featured in 2008′s Sundance Film Festival; Associate
Producer for the independent feature film, Dear Lemon Lima (2009) by Sanguine Films, and Director of Photography of The Messenger (2012) by Kade Mendelowitz.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada was founded in 1893 when representatives of stagehands working in eleven cities met in New York and pledged to support each others’ efforts to establish fair wages and working conditions for their members.
Today the IATSE is the largest union representing workers in the entertainment industry. Members work in all forms of live theater, motion picture and television production, trade shows and exhibitions, television broadcasting, and concerts as well as the equipment and construction shops that support all these areas of the entertainment industry.
Certification of Completion from IATSE will be issued by all participants of these courses.
SEPTEMBER 15 – FILM SET CONSTRUCTION
Instructor Gary Field. 9am-6pm.
Mr. Field has 45 years experience in technical theatre, TV and film, He worked Big Miracle, Runaway Train, and sever commercials in Boston. He is a Charter member for Local 918 and was technical director for Alaska Reparatory Theatre for six years.
GOALS –
1) Teach safe working practices in and around the shop and to instruct students in the safe operation of many of the power and hand tools that they will be required to use in the shop and on location.
2) To instruct students in the basic requirements needed in building set pieces such as walls, window, and door flats.
3) To have students build wall, window, and door flats, and to setup, brace, and create an interior setting.

SEPTEMBER 22 – INTRODUCTION TO GRIP 101 – 9AM-5PM

DESCRIPTION – This is a one-day (7 hour) intensive designed to provide the novice with an introduction and broad overview of the Grip Department on a motion picture production. Objectives include set hierarchy and relationships of each department on a motion picture production; set etiquette; overview of common grip equipment used for motion picture; understanding basic grip and rigging schemes for the motion picture industry; understanding of safety and best practices; overview of tools and gear necessary to build your personal kit; building production resume/networking.

This will include hierarchy and relationships of each department on a motion picture production. Set etiquette, basic lighting theory for film and video, overview of common lighting instruments/equipment used for motion picture production, safety and best practices on set, understanding tools and gear necessary to build your personal kit, building production resume/networking.

Film Screening and Reception
Film UAF and the College of Liberal Arts Collaborative Arts Council will host
ANDREW OKPEAHA MACLEAN and CARA MARCOUS for a film screening of their acclaimed feature film, ON THE ICE.
Official Selection of the Sundance Film Festival 2011, Winner of the Best Narrative Feature and Best Cinematography Awards at Woodstock Film Festival 2011, Winner of the Crystal Bear at Berlinale 2011, Best Director at the American Indian Film Festival 2011, plus many other acclaims, this film opens in New York, Anchorage and FAIRBANKS on February 17, 2012.
The filmmakers will be present at the February 19, 4PM screening of the film at Regal Cinemas, then will join Film UAF for a recepetion in their honor at Miguel's Authentic Mexican Cuisine.
The filmmakers will introduce the film on 2/19 for the 7:45PM screening.
Andrew and Cara will join Film UAF, and the Native Arts Center for presentations about filmmaking at UAF on 2/20.
Shot entirely on location in Barrow, Alaska, ON THE ICE is the first Iñuqiaq feature film with an all Inuit cast.
In this engrossing and suspenseful feature film debut by filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, two teenage boys who have grown up like brothers go about their lives in the comfortable claustrophobia of an isolated Alaskan town. Early one morning, on a seal hunt with another teenager, an argument between the three boys quickly escalates into a tragic accident. Bonded by their dark secret, the two best friends are forced to create one fabrication after another in order to survive. The shocked boys stumble through guilt-fueled days, avoiding the suspicions of their community as they weave a web of deceit. With their future in the balance, they are forced to explore the limits of friendship and honor.
Featuring breakout performances by Josiah Patkotak and Frank Qutuq Irelan.
