Emeriti recipients

Dr. Angayuqaq Oscar Kawagley,

Associate Professor of Education, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Angayuqaq Oscar Kawagley has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1987 to 2009; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kawagley has brought a unique combination of indigenous perspectives and western scholarship to the University and its students and faculty; and has influenced a generation of Native scholars, demonstrating the values of respecting and incorporating Native knowledge while engaging with programs of the academy; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kawagley has been a pivotal figure in defining a field of study on indigenous knowledge systems and epistemology; and whose trailbreaking research examining Western scientific paradigms and indigenous peoples' explanations of natural phenomena has resonated with indigenous leaders and scholars throughout the world, making him one of the most recognized and respected authorities in his field; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kawagley's extensive and influential capacity to operate in both the Native and non-Native cultural spheres has done much to facilitate cooperative relations and actions among educators, students and Native communities; and has devoted his great intellectual energy and personal integrity to fostering respect and communication among all people;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Angayuqaq Oscar Kawagley for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Kawagley and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Angayuqaq Oscar Kawagley as Associate Professor of Education, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Angayuqaq Oscar Kawagley, and conveyed to Dr. Kawagley on this day of May 10, 2009.
