Dr. Aldona Jonaitis
WHEREAS Dr. Aldona Jonaitis has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1993 to 2009; and
WHEREAS Dr. Jonaitis has been an exemplary, indefatigable advocate of the University of Alaska Museum of the North; and has devoted her extraordinary energies to the design of a bold new wing to the museum and a successful effort to raise tens of millions of dollars for its construction, resulting in one of the signature architectural pieces of Interior Alaska; and
WHEREAS Dr. Jonaitis has attracted a diverse and dynamic group of museum research and exhibit professionals whose own standards of excellence have made the Museum of the North one of the premier northern institutes of circumpolar studies; and
WHEREAS Dr. Jonaitis, a researcher and academic herself, has continued to contribute numerous scholarly works to her own field, the study of Northwest Coast native art; and has published ten books and monographs, and twenty-seven articles; and has, through her studies but above all through her work on behalf of the Museum of the North, helped provide for the safekeeping of the world's northern treasures for future generations' examination and enjoyment;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Aldona Jonaitis for her extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Jonaitis and as evidence of the University's desire that her identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Aldona Jonaitis as Director, Emerita; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Aldona Jonaitis, and conveyed to Dr. Jonaitis on this day of May 10, 2009.
