Dr. John D. Craven

Professor of Physics, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. John D. Craven has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1991 to 2009; and

WHEREAS Dr. Craven is highly regarded by students and colleagues as an educator who constantly seeks pedagogical innovation while maintaining standards of excellence in a broad range of physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and has successfully mentored doctoral and master's degree students as advisor, committee chair and committee member; and

WHEREAS Dr. Craven is recognized as a leader in aeronomy, auroral and magnetospheric physics research, as well as for creating research opportunities for others; and has participated in the design, manufacture and flight operations of research instruments flown on many spacecraft; and has produced more than one hundred influential scientific publications as author or co-author during his extensive career; and

WHEREAS Dr. Craven has provided outstanding service to the University and to the scientific community through roles on committees, boards and review panels; and has made substantial contributions to the University as President of the Faculty Senate, as Chair of the Physics Department and in other leadership capacities;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. John D. Craven for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Craven and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. John D. Craven as Professor of Physics, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. John D. Craven, and conveyed to Dr. Craven on this day of May 10, 2009.
