M.S., Virginia Tech (Virginia), 1997 Thesis: The Effects of Scale and Spatial Heterogeneities on Diffusion in Volcanic Breccias and Basalts: Amchitka Island, Alaska This study examined the effects of heterogeneities in the subsurface on the diffusive transport of radionuclides for the underground nuclear test site at Amchitka Island, Alaska. The results indicate that the diffusive properties for Amchitka Island are highly variable, which is important for long-term radionuclide transport modeling efforts. Major Professor: Dr. David L. M.S., University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2003 Thesis: The Influence of Soil Cryostructure on the Creep and Long Term Strength Properties of Frozen Soils The time-dependent mechanical properties of frozen soils were studied in relation to soil cryostructure (pattern of ice inclusion), which is used as an indicator of how a soil was deposited and subsequently frozen. Cryostructure was found to influence the creep, long term strength, and unfrozen water characteristics of frozen soils. M.S., University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2004 Thesis: Experimental and Numerical Study of Sonic Wave Propagation in Freezing Sand and Silt In conjunction with the temperature-velocity model developed in the study, the inward and outward freezing process and freezing front development in sand and silt samples were observed using computerized ultrasonic tomography in the laboratory and comparably simulated using comprehensive numerical finite element method. M.S., University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2003 Thesis: Numerical Simulation of Single Phase and Boiling Microjet Impingement This thesis presents simulation results of laminar, confined single-phase and boiling microjet impingement. The single phase impingement studies show a strong dependence of the heat transfer on the recirculation patterns while the boiling jets show a strong dependence of the heat transfer on the inlet subcooling of the jet.
