Dr. Edward C. Murphy
Professor of Biology and Wildlife, Emeritus
WHEREAS Dr. Edward C. Murphy has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1977 to 2008; and
WHEREAS Dr. Murphy has throughout his thirty-year career at the University demonstrated an unwavering commitment to and service in the interest of students; and has through his courses positively influenced hundreds of students, from freshmen to graduates; and is known for establishing high standards but working closely with his students to help them meet them; and
WHEREAS Dr. Murphy has conducted research that has led to improved understanding of a diverse range of Alaska animals and their ecologies, including seabirds, woodpeckers, passerines, harbor seals, Dall sheep and bowhead whales; and has authored or co-authored articles about his findings in more than fifty journals and reports; and
WHEREAS Dr. Murphy has frequently assumed leadership roles at the University, including multiple terms as Chair of the Department of Biology and Wildlife, acting dean of the Graduate School, and associate dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics; and has ably chaired graduate advisory committees for numerous master’s degree students and doctoral degree candidates;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Edward C. Murphy for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Murphy and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Edward C. Murphy as Professor of Biology and Wildlife, Emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Edward C. Murphy, and conveyed to Dr. Murphy on this day of May 11, 2008.
