Eichelberger has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1991 to 2007; and WHEREAS Dr. Eichelberger is recognized as a world leader in volcanology whose research resulted in paradigm shifts in scientific understanding of eruptions; and has been instrumental in leading the Alaska Volcano Observatory to national and international prominence; and whose achievements in his field of study have been acknowledged by his being awarded the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Research Award in 2005; and WHEREAS Dr. Eichelberger has served as chair of the Department of Geology and Geophysics, as group leader for volcanology in the Geophysical Institute and as coordinating scientist of the Alaska Volcano Observatory and has been a strong advocate on behalf of these organizations; and has served the broader discipline of volcanology as editor for noted national and international scientific journals and monographs; and WHEREAS Dr. Eichelberger has been recognized as an enthusiastic teacher, well-liked by his students and highly esteemed in his department, noted for attracting bright new students to the field of volcanology; and has mentored numerous graduate students who subsequently established their own distinguished careers; and has established international volcanology field camps that provide outstanding multidisciplinary training opportunities for students and foster good international relations with the Russian Far East and Japan; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Eichelberger for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Eichelberger and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. John C. Eichelberger as Professor of Geology and Geophysics, Emeritus; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. John C. Eichelberger, and conveyed to Dr. Eichelberger on this day of May 11, 2008. |
