Dr. Phyllis Morrow

Professor of Anthropology and Dean, Emerita

WHEREAS Dr. Phyllis Morrow has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1987 to 2007; and

WHEREAS Dr. Morrow has applied her extensive background in cultural anthropology to educating students at all levels of University studies, from undergraduate courses to graduate seminars; and has advised numerous master of arts students as well as several doctoral candidates, many of whom subsequently became respected anthropologists themselves; and

WHEREAS Dr. Morrow has established herself as one of the leading scholars of Alaska Native anthropology, during the course of her career, particularly in the Yup’ik Eskimo area of southwest Alaska; and has made significant contributions to the sub-fields of symbolic and linguistic anthropology, oral literature, folklore and cross-cultural communication, notably in the legal sphere; and has an impressive record of fieldwork, some of which has resulted in productive collaborations with colleagues in related fields; and

WHEREAS Dr. Morrow has shared her expertise with others throughout the world through her participation and membership in professional societies and advisory boards, and through an impressive array of publications as a writer and editor; and has brought her considerable knowledge of cultural matters to bear on legal matters as a consultant and expert witness for the State of Alaska; and has ably served the University not only as a respected teacher and researcher but also as a Dean of the College of Liberal Arts;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Phyllis Morrow for her extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Morrow and as evidence of the University’s desire that her identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Phyllis Morrow as Professor of Anthropology and Dean, Emerita; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Phyllis Morrow, and conveyed to Dr. Morrow on this day of May 13, 2007.
