Speakers and honorary degree recipients The keynote speaker for commencement 2006 was Rutgers University Distinguished Professor and noted biologist Joanna Burger. She is one of two people who received honorary doctoral degrees during UAF’s 84th commencement ceremony. The second honorary degree went to the late Sir Nicholas John Shackleton, an internationally known earth scientist. Honorary degree recipients are chosen both for their lasting contributions to the state and nation and for significant achievements in their respective disciplines. Meritorious service award recipients UAF honored Fairbanks Daily News-Miner publisher emeritus Charles Gray with a meritorious service award.
