2006 Professors Emeriti

Dr. Thomas C. Shirley

Professor of Fisheries, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Thomas C. Shirley has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1984 to 2005; and

WHEREAS Dr. Shirley has been an integral part of his students' academic and research experiences at the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, teaching a range of biology and marine classes from introductory to advanced graduate courses; and has supervised nearly two dozen master's and doctoral degree candidates and has served on the graduate committees of thirty-two additional graduate students; and

WHEREAS Dr. Shirley has distinguished both himself and the University with an outstanding collection of research published in sixty-five peer-reviewed journals as well as many other book chapters, reports, proceedings and other publications; and has admirably represented the University as an invited speaker at lectures and events throughout the country and around the world; and

WHEREAS Dr. Shirley has greatly enhanced the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences and the University through his long-standing and diligent service on numerous curriculum, selection and planning committees, among others; and has served ably as director of the School's Fishery Division; and has generously lent his expertise to a variety of organizations and events ranging from high school science fairs to the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council's Crab Plan Team;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Thomas C. Shirley for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Shirley and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Thomas C. Shirley as Professor of Fisheries, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Thomas C. Shirley, and conveyed to Dr. Shirley on this day of May 14, 2006.
