Dr. Gerald S. Berman
Professor of Social Work and Sociology, Emeritus
WHEREAS Dr. Gerald S. Berman has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1980 to 2006; and
WHEREAS Dr. Berman has been highly regarded by his students not just for his expertise but also for his compassion in conveying that expertise, and his concern that his students develop both personally and professionally, so that he received the College of Liberal Arts' Outstanding Teaching Award in 2005; and willingly assumed a broad range of teaching responsibilities in both sociology and social work, from core classes to practica; and founded the Organization of Student Social Workers, whose members subsequently named a scholarship in his honor; and
WHEREAS Dr. Berman has authored more than twenty chapters, papers, reports and articles in refereed journals and other publications; and has presented his work at more than a dozen conferences and meetings throughout the world; and has enhanced his research on Alaska Native issues through comparisons with similar challenges facing minority populations in other countries; and
WHEREAS Dr. Berman has volunteered many hours to the improvement of the departments of Social Work and Sociology, the University and the community by serving on review, advisory and faculty search committees, frequently as committee chair; and served for many years as program coordinator or department head of several academic units; and assisted numerous social service agencies to enhance their outreach and education programs;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Gerald S. Berman for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Berman and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Gerald S. Berman as Professor of Social Work and Sociology, Emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Gerald S. Berman, and conveyed to Dr. Berman on this day of May 14, 2006.
