Degree and emeriti recipients2006 Professors emeriti Dr. Charlotte S. Basham Associate Professor of Linguistics and Anthropology, Emerita WHEREAS Dr. Charlotte S. Basham has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1983 to 2005; and WHEREAS Dr. Basham has been lauded as a thorough and effective teacher who regularly and willingly extended her assistance beyond the classroom to conduct individual teaching and mentoring sessions for students seeking further instruction and clarification; and further exercised her extensive knowledge of the University of Alaska Fairbanks to guide students' educational choices as an academic advisor; and WHEREAS Dr. Basham has devoted much of her professional career to exploring issues of indigenous language acquisition and second-language use, particularly of Alaska Native languages, which has tremendous implications for the teaching and survival of those languages; and has applied her findings in the collaborative development of innovative language instructional materials; and WHEREAS Dr. Basham has demonstrated a consistent spirit of goodwill and sense of responsibility in volunteering her time to numerous University departments and committees; and has been widely praised for her ability to bring about consensus from diverging opinions; and has used her expertise on matters of cultural respect and sensitivity to assist many individuals and organizations in developing culturally sensitive methods and materials; and has been a driving force behind the creation and implementation of the master of arts in applied linguistics program; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Charlotte S. Basham for her extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Basham and as evidence of the University's desire that her identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Charlotte S. Basham as Associate Professor of Linguistics and Anthropology, Emerita; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Charlotte S. Basham, and conveyed to Dr. Basham on this day of May 14, 2006. |
