Thesis: A Walleye Pollock (Theragra Chalcogramma) Depletion Estimator for the Eastern Bering Sea
A DeLury depletion estimator for walleye pollock in and around Steller sea lion critical habitat in the eastern Bering Sea indicated a significant amount of depletion in the pollock fishery from 1995-1999. Evidence suggests that depletion is detected more easily in areas of low abundance, due to the hyperstable relationship between CPUE and biomass, and dispersing exploitation pressure decreases local depletion.

Major Professor: Dr. Terrance J. Quinn II

Georgina Anne Gibson Ph.D. Oceanography: Biological

B.S., University of Wales (United Kingdom), 1998

Thesis: Non-Linear Dynamics of Marine Ecosystem Models
The dynamical behavior of marine Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton (NPZ) models was explored. Using several alternative zooplankton grazing and predation functions, state variable oscillations were shows to be an intrinsic property of NPZ models, independent of season forcing. Including of sinking detritus had important implications for the composition and excitability of model solutions.

Major Professor: Dr. David L. Musgrave

Jeffrey Wayne Short Ph.D. Fisheries

B.S., University of California, 1973
M.S., University of California, 1982

Thesis: Seasonal Variability of Pristane in Mussels (Mytilus trossulus) in Prince William Sound, Alaska
Pristane is a hydrocarbon produced by Neocalanus copepods that inhibits the growth of salmonids that prey on them. Feces that result from this predation retain pristane residues that are readily incorporated by suspension-feeding organisms such as mussels. Monitoring pristane in mussels may reflect the intensity of predation on these copepods.
