2005 Professors Emeriti Dr. Raymond Highsmith WHEREAS Dr. Raymond Highsmith has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1983 to 2005; and WHEREAS Dr. Highsmith has inspired and encouraged students through his development of new courses, leading challenging summer field programs in marine biology and coordinating programs for students and researchers such as the Global Undersea Research Unit within the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences; and WHEREAS Dr. Highsmith is an internationally acclaimed scientist with particular expertise in benthic communities whose work has been published widely; and is frequently requested as a reviewer for notable scholarly journals; and has been a leader in bringing research grant funding to the University; and who has made major contributions to the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences through activities such as initiating collaborations with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which culminated in the development of the Kasitsna Bay Laboratory and the West Coast and Polar Regions Undersea Research Center; and WHEREAS Dr. Highsmith has served both the University and the community through his valued participation on numerous committees, including as a representative and as President of the UAF Faculty Senate; and has furthered the University's academic outreach through his many educational presentations about marine biology for students and teachers at public schools; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Raymond Highsmith for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Highsmith and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Raymond Highsmith as Professor of Marine Science, Emeritus; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Raymond Highsmith, and conveyed to Dr. Highsmith on this day of May 15, 2005. |
