2005 Professors Emeriti

Dr. Keith A. Echelmeyer
Professor of Geophysics, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Keith A. Echelmeyer has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1984 to 2005; and

WHEREAS Dr. Echelmeyer has been an admired source of education and inspiration to countless students for both his scientific virtuosity and his enthusiasm for and creativity in exploring new scientific methods and techniques; and has guided the intellectual development of thirty graduate students through his participation on their graduate committees; and

WHEREAS Dr. Echelmeyer has greatly expanded the body of knowledge in the field of glaciology, for which he received the 1994 Terris and Katrina Moore Award for Geophysical Research and the 2003 Emil Usibelli Distinguished Research Award; and, coupling his skills as a pilot and inventor, developed an innovative and successful global positioning and altimeter system to measure ice fields from his own specially modified airplane; and whose overall contributions to glaciology have resulted in the naming of an Antarctic ice stream for him; and

WHEREAS Dr. Echelmeyer has admirably represented the University through his many hours of educational service in the classrooms and at science fairs within the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District; and has conducted public lectures and interviews on a variety of topics related to his field; and has ably served the University and scientific communities in committee and advisory work;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Keith A. Echelmeyer for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Echelmeyer and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Keith A. Echelmeyer as Professor of Geophysics, Emeritus ; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Keith A. Echelmeyer, and conveyed to Dr. Echelmeyer on this day of May 15, 2005.
