Dr. D. K. Button
Professor of Marine Science and Biochemistry, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. D. K. Button has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1964 to 2005; and

WHEREAS Dr. Button has served as teacher, mentor and guide to students and colleagues through more than four decades of service to the University; and has taught several undergraduate and graduate courses; and has offered his expertise as a member of numerous graduate committees; and has served as formal mentor to more than a dozen graduate students, and as both formal and informal advisor to many more; and

WHEREAS Dr. Button has won the admiration of countless colleagues for his work in marine science and biochemistry; and is particularly well regarded for his significant and novel contributions to the understanding of flow cytometry and to kinetic theory as relates to whole cells and aquatic microorganisms; and has authored or co-authored more than seventy papers and articles in numerous prestigious publications; and

WHEREAS Dr. Button has collaborated extensively and successfully with his peers from a range of disciplines and institutions, from the National Academy of Sciences to the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; and has received a distinguished service award for his exemplary work as a member of the editorial board for Applied and Environmental Microbiology;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. D. K. Button for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Button and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. D. K. Button as Professor of Marine Science and Biochemistry, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. D. K. Button , and conveyed to Dr. Button on this day of May 15, 2005.
