Dr. Vera Alexander
Dean and Professor of Marine Science, Emerita

WHEREAS Dr. Vera Alexander has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1965 to 2005; and

WHEREAS Dr. Alexander has inspired and mentored numerous students throughout her forty years of teaching and leadership in marine science, and through serving as major professor for many doctoral and master's degree students; and

WHEREAS Dr. Alexander has contributed significantly to the world's knowledge of marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments of arctic Alaska; and is recognized internationally as a scientist of the highest caliber through honors such as being named a Harriman Scholar and receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Japan's Hokkaido University; and

WHEREAS Dr. Alexander has served with distinction in leadership roles throughout her career, for the University as Dean of the College of Environmental Science, Dean of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, Director of the Institute of Marine Science, and for the international marine research community through roles such as Chair of the North Pacific Marine Science Organization, as a Commissioner on the United States Marine Mammal Commission and as President of the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States, as well as in numerous other posts within the University, Alaska and the Nation;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Vera Alexander for her extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Alexander and as evidence of the University's desire that her identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Vera Alexander as Dean and Professor of Marine Science, Emerita; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Vera Alexander, and conveyed to Dr. Alexander on this day of May 15, 2005.
