WHEREAS Dr. Walter Tape has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1982 to 2004; and
WHEREAS Dr. Tape has displayed great facility in translating abstract mathematical concepts into concrete terms to students of all academic levels; and has been much admired by colleagues and students alike for the evident care he takes in teaching and for his passionate belief that students should be active participants rather than passive learners; and has assisted in furthering the careers of several students through his participation on their graduate committees; and
WHEREAS Dr. Tape has applied his mathematical expertise to the study of the physics of atmospheric phenomena, particularly those of halos caused by ice crystals; and has secured several grants from the National Science Foundation to pursue his research in the polar regions of both the northern and southern hemispheres; and whose work has been presented in a variety of publications, ranging from a children's magazine to technical and professional journals, and in his book "Atmospheric Halos"; and
WHEREAS Dr. Tape has been a staunch and reliable supporter of the Department of Mathematical Sciences in his willingness to assume responsibility for necessary if unglamorous departmental tasks; and has extended his classroom talents and research knowledge to the general public through several popular lectures;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Walter Tape for his extensive contributions to both the state of Alaska and the university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Tape and as evidence of the university's desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Walter Tape as Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Walter Tape, and conveyed to Dr. Tape on this day of May 9, 2004.
