RESOLUTION
conferring upon
MR. FRANK SOOS
the title of
Professor of Creative Writing, Emeritus

WHEREAS Mr. Frank Soos has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1986 to 2004; and

WHEREAS Mr. Soos has been indispensable in establishing the nationally recognized master of fine arts in creative writing degree program; and is greatly revered by his students for his caring support of their development as writers; and has been instrumental in contributing to the future success of creative writing students as teachers as well as artists; and has served as thesis committee chair or member for dozens of graduate students; and has been a seemingly inexhaustible mentor to countless undergraduate and graduate students by formal and informal means; and

WHEREAS Mr. Soos has been a prolific and highly regarded writer in his own right; and has brought distinction to the university with his numerous awards, among them the prestigious Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction; and has published three books of short stories to critical acclaim, and has published many stories in well-regarded periodicals; and

WHEREAS Mr. Soos has served on or chaired many committees at the department, college and university levels; and has been actively engaged in contributing to the local arts community through his participation in and coordination of many conferences and workshops; and is greatly admired by his colleagues for his steadying influence in departmental matters and his willingness to assume responsibility for numerous essential tasks, to the benefit of students and faculty alike;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Mr. Frank Soos for his extensive contributions to both the state of Alaska and the university; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Mr. Soos and as evidence of the university's desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Mr. Frank Soos as Professor of Creative Writing, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Mr. Frank Soos, and conveyed to Mr. Soos on this day of May 9, 2004.
