Professor of Physics, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Glenn E. Shaw has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1971 to 2004; and

WHEREAS Dr. Shaw has inspired students to make their own discoveries for more than three decades; and has been lauded for his diligent care of students by their commendatory evaluations and by the Meritorious Teaching Award from the University of Alaska Alumni Association; and has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in physics and atmospheric science; and has served as a careful and conscientious mentor to his students as well as chair of four doctoral degree committees; and

WHEREAS Dr. Shaw's research has had a profound impact on the understanding of atmospheric science and its relation to issues of global warming and pollution, especially in polar regions; and has been particularly effective as a researcher and colleague because of his extraordinary range of expertise; and has demonstrated remarkable productivity in his publishing of more than 150 scientific papers and reports, some of which garnered attention in prestigious national publications; and whose work has been duly recognized with the presentation of the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Research Award and the Terris and Katrina Moore Prize for his scientific contributions; and

WHEREAS Dr. Shaw has greatly benefited the institution through his activities with a variety of university and professional organizations; and whose commitment to public service extends from his own professional circle to the furthest reaches of public concern, from assisting in the development of the renowned Geophysical Institute to testifying before Congress on global climate change;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Glenn E. Shaw for his extensive contributions to both the state of Alaska and the university; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Shaw and as evidence of the university's desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Glenn E. Shaw as Professor of Physics, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Glenn E. Shaw, and conveyed to Dr. Shaw on this day of May 9, 2004.
