RESOLUTION
conferring upon
DR. SATYANARAYAN A. NAIDU
the title of
Professor of Marine Science, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Satyanarayan A. Naidu has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1969 to 2004; and

WHEREAS Dr. Naidu has shared his vast knowledge of arctic and subarctic geological oceanography with countless graduate students; and has acted as mentor to numerous master's degree and doctoral degree candidates through service on many thesis advisory committees; and

WHEREAS Dr. Naidu's scientific examinations have materially enhanced scientists' understanding of Alaska marine geology, in particular marine and deltaic sediments, contaminants in sediments and fish and paleoceanography; and has broadened the scope of the university's research by developing and guiding multidisciplinary research projects about the Arctic; and whose findings have been published in many prestigious peer-reviewed journals and books; and whose expertise is recognized in his appointment as a Life Fellow of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge and Elected Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America and of the Geological Society of India; and

WHEREAS Dr. Naidu has contributed his professional expertise and personal energy to a variety of university and civic organizations, from serving on the board of directors for the Alaska Quaternary Center and the Alaska chapter of the scientific research society Sigma Xi, to the presidency of the College Rotary Club, to the co-chairmanship of the advisory committee of bilingual programs for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, along with many other appointments;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Satyanarayan A. Naidu for his extensive contributions to both the state of Alaska and the university; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Naidu and as evidence of the university's desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Satyanarayan A. Naidu as Professor of Marine Science, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Satyanarayan A. Naidu, and conveyed to Dr. Naidu on this day of May 9, 2004.
