WHEREAS Dr. Donald E. Carling served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1981 to 2003; and
WHEREAS Dr. Carling successfully sought ways to communicate the benefits of his formidable research to a variety of audiences, from science experts to amateur gardeners; and furthered the academic careers of graduate and undergraduate students as teacher, mentor and thesis committee member; and willingly assisted his colleagues by providing careful and thoughtful program and course work reviews; and
WHEREAS Dr. Carling engaged in an exceptional array of research with both theoretical and practical applications in plant pathology; and wrote and published nearly 200 documents including refereed and peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, government reports and topical brochures for both technical and general audiences; and
WHEREAS Dr. Carling greatly enhanced the ability of farmers and greenhouse operators in the state to improve the quality and production of their crops through his cooperative work with the Alaska Division of Agriculture, the Alaska Farm Bureau and the Crop Improvement Association to establish protocols for certified seed growers; and demonstrated professional flexibility in his willingness to address other emerging issues of importance to Alaska entrepreneurs, especially in the area of turf-related disease control;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Donald E. Carling for his extensive contributions to both the state of Alaska and the university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Carling and as evidence of the university's desire that his identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Donald E. Carling as Professor of Horticulture, Emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately
engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of
Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect
in which he holds Dr. Donald E. Carling, and conveyed to Dr.
Carling on this day of May 9, 2004.
