Associate Professor of English, Emerita

WHEREAS Dr. Susan Elizabeth Blalock has served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1986 to 2004; and

WHEREAS Dr. Blalock has been commended by her colleagues and students alike for her concern for and consideration of her students' scholastic success; and has expanded her teaching talents beyond her own classroom to incorporate innovative techniques in peer tutoring and technological advances in distance education, an element crucial to meeting the education needs of Alaska's rural students; and

WHEREAS Dr. Blalock has made important contributions to literary studies, most notably with her research into T.S. Eliot and Robert Browning; and has further made significant contributions to pedagogical studies through her assessment and analysis of student-focused services such as tutoring and composition theory; and

WHEREAS Dr. Blalock has been the driving force behind the success of the Writing Center, a peer-to-peer tutoring service that reaches students both on the Fairbanks campus and in small communities throughout the state; and has been instrumental in securing grants and awards to increase the size and scope of work done by the Writing Center, without which the service could not have thrived as it has; and has been the enthusiastic impetus behind the establishment of the university chapter of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society; and has served the university well not only in her role of professor but also associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts as well as director of a variety of programs; and has further represented the university in her volunteer work with many local community support organizations;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Susan Elizabeth Blalock for her extensive contributions to both the state of Alaska and the university; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Blalock and as evidence of the university's desire that her identification with the university be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Susan Elizabeth Blalock as Associate Professor of English, Emerita; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Susan Elizabeth Blalock, and conveyed to Dr. Blalock on this day of May 9, 2004.
