RESOLUTION
conferring upon
DR. NAGABHUSHANA M.S. RAO
the title of
Professor of Sociology, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Nagabhushana M.S. Rao served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1970 to 2003; and

WHEREAS Dr. Rao played a signifcant role in broadening the academic opportunities of the University's students through his development and teaching of more than ten distance delivered courses, reaching more than 28,000 students; and was the co-recipient of a Fulbright Grant, with which support he and a colleague led a group of faculty, high school teachers and students on a six-week cultural and academic tour of India; and used his ability to bridge cultural differences successfully to introduce to his students a wider world beyond the confines of the classroom; and has further served both students and faculty over the years as the chair or department head of several units and programs; and

WHEREAS Dr. Rao's investigations in the areas of migration and family planning resulted in more than two dozen papers presented at professional meetings or in publications; and applied his expertise to sociological questions pertaining to Alaska, the nation and the world; and

WHEREAS Dr. Rao has been a forceful and productive member of many University committees and councils, ranging from the International Student Exchange Program to the Summer School Advisory Council, but is most recognized for his unflagging interest in and advocacy of faculty rights and participation in the progress of the University; and ably represents the University through his involvement in a range of professional organizations;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Nagabhushana M.S. Rao for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Rao and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Nagabhushana M.S. Rao as Professor of Sociology, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Nagabhushana M.S. Rao, and conveyed to Dr. Rao on this day of May 11, 2003.
