2003 Emeriti

RESOLUTION
conferring upon
DR. CARLA A. KIRTS
the title of
Dean of Student Services, Emerita and Associate Professor of Agricultural Education, Emerita

WHEREAS Dr. Carla A. Kirts served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1981 to 2002; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kirts' extraordinary care and respect for students were formally recognized by the Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as Faculty Member of the Year in 1992; and invested each of her courses, whether seminars or independent studies, with passion and concern for the intellectual and academic development of her students; and served as advisor to hundreds of undergraduate and many graduate students; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kirts, as an advocate for enhancing the education experience of students, conscientiously assessed the efficacy of her own style of teaching as well as those of her colleagues, and applied her findings to develop increasingly successful pedagogical skills that were reflected in the enthusiastic and high regard in which students held her; and combined her scientific and academic training in agriculture, forestry and education that helped fulfill a mission of the University and a need of the State to develop natural resource management specialists and leaders; and published more than two dozen books, book chapters, articles and curriculum materials; and represented the University at a dozen professional conferences and proceedings; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kirts served the students, the University and the State with her unflagging enthusiasm and leadership on service and advisory committees at the departmental and institutional level, and in her role as Dean of Student Services; and promoted the University with her tireless recruitment efforts throughout the State and willing participation with organizations ranging from the Camp Fire Girls to the Alaska Department of Education;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Carla A. Kirts for her extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Kirts and as evidence of the University's desire that her identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Carla A. Kirts as Dean of Student Services, Emerita and Associate Professor of Agricultural Education, Emerita; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Carla A. Kirts, and conveyed to Dr. Kirts on this day of May 11, 2003.
