2003 Emeriti

RESOLUTION
conferring upon
DR. JOSEPH R. KAN
the title of
Dean of the Graduate School, Emeritus and Professor of Physics, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Joseph R. Kan served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1972 to 2003; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kan has demonstrated great leadership and concern for students in his roles as professor and dean, whether in teaching, mentoring and advising, or developing and encouraging the growth of new graduate programs at the University; and has taught numerous graduate and undergraduate courses; and has consistently strived to expand the opportunities of graduate students by involving them in his many research projects; and has been an ardent proponent of the emerging possibilities in online education; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kan has brought renown to the University through his unique contributions to the study of space plasma physics at the Geophysical Institute; and has been hailed by experts in the field for his innovative global substorm model; and has published more than 130 papers in peer-reviewed journals; and

WHEREAS Dr. Kan has overseen a significant growth in the number and quality of graduate programs at the University, which his colleagues attribute in no small degree to his tenacity as dean and his commitment to creating a stronger and more dynamic University;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Joseph R. Kan for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Kan and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Joseph R. Kan as Dean of the Graduate School, Emeritus and Professor of Physics, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Joseph R. Kan, and conveyed to Dr. Kan on this day of May 11, 2003.
