RESOLUTION
conferring upon
DR. GARY D. COPUS
the title of
Professor of Justice, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Gary D. Copus served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1980 to 2002; and

WHEREAS Dr. Copus played a crucial role in the creation of a Master of Arts program in Administration of Justice, the University's first Internet-based graduate degree, as well as several online undergraduate courses and an associate degree designed for distance delivery; and increased the scope of the institution's Justice Department through the development and directorship of the internship program, which has placed more than 100 undergraduates in local, state and federal agencies throughout Alaska, giving them critical insights into the workings of the justice system; and extended his teaching to the University's aviation program, where he was an instructor in private pilot ground school;

WHEREAS Dr. Copus has studied how Western justice systems affect and are incorporated into Alaska's rural communities and Native populations; and has written or co-written articles for eight refereed journals or books, and has authored well over a dozen additional professional papers or presentations; and

WHEREAS Dr. Copus initiated the justice Community Advisory Board to offer advice on the continuing growth and success of the University's Justice Department; and has represented the University well through his enthusiastic willingness to coordinate and work with numerous agencies and organizations to improve the justice system throughout the State;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Gary D. Copus for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Copus and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Gary D. Copus as Professor of Justice, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Gary D. Copus, and conveyed to Dr. Copus on this day of May 11, 2003.
