RESOLUTION
conferring upon
DR. NIRENDRA N. BISWAS
the title of
Professor of Geophysics, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Nirendra N. Biswas served the University of Alaska Fairbanks with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1971 to 2003; and

WHEREAS Dr. Biswas has played an important role in the academic careers of upper division and graduate students in his teaching of seismology and wave theory courses; and has dedicated his considerable scientific and pedagogical talent to mentoring several master's degree candidates; and

WHEREAS Dr. Biswas was instrumental in the expansion of the Alaska seismometer network from a mere handful to some 120 stations, which vastly increased researchers' understanding of Alaska seismic activity; and initiated a strong-motion seismometer network in Anchorage, whose findings allow geologists, seismologists and engineers to address the city's critical infrastructure needs in relation to seismic activity; and whose body of work has gained an international acclaim that has raised the prestige of the Geophysical Institute and the University to a level of world-renown; and

WHEREAS Dr. Biswas has made great contributions to the people of the State of Alaska by improving our knowledge of Alaska geology and seismology; and has served his University colleagues through his participation on the Faculty Senate and as chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Nirendra N. Biswas for his extensive contributions to both the State of Alaska and the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Biswas and as evidence of the University's desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Nirendra N. Biswas as Professor of Geophysics, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Fairbanks as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Nirendra N. Biswas, and conveyed to Dr. Biswas on this day of May 11, 2003.
